About the Area

Thinking about a vacation in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia? Located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, Front Royal is the north entrance to the Skyline Drive and offers a huge variety of scenic getaways, civil war history, caverns, quaint shops selling antiques and more!

For those who enjoy hiking, canoeing and other outdoor activities, the Shenandoah Valley offers some of the best opportunities in the country. To the west of Front Royal lies Fort Valley; much of which George Washington himself surveyed. It was his intention was to use this area (now preserved as the George Washington National Forest) for sheltering his army at their "last stand," which service thankfully was not required. In the southern end of the county lies Shenandoah National Park, the entrance to scenic Skyline Drive. This area is also home to Skyline Caverns, the only place on earth to see anthodite rock formations, and the Luray Caverns are just forty minutes further south. The southern and western parts of the county boast a wide variety of campgrounds, both public and private. For the aquatically inclined, canoe, rafting and tubing outfitters abound on the south fork of the Shenandoah River, which is also known for some of the best fishing in the region.

For the history buff, the Shenandoah Valley is an adventurer's gold mine of adventure. The area was the site of several campaigns during the Civil War, including Stonewall Jackson's famous Valley Campaign against Union General Nathaniel Banks. Several battles fought in and around Front Royal were decisive to that campaign, and there are many historical markers and monuments commemorating these events. Warren County was the headquarters of Mosby's Raiders and is also the location of The Belle Boyd Cottage, home of the famous Confederate spy. Numerous Civil War museums can be found in town and several major battlefields, such as Bull Run Battlefield and Museum, are just a short drive away. The Warren County Heritage Society also provides visitors with a wealth of local history, not just of the Civil War, but from the earliest days of the county to modern times.

For those just seeking a quiet escape, come and enjoy the valley's world famous hospitality. There are dozens of Bed and Breakfasts, historic inns and fine ethnic and gourmet restaurants. Antique shops, local crafts and the region's famous Virginia hams and apple products also make the county a touring delight! While you are here don't forget to investigate the local wineries and become an expert on Virginia wines, fast becoming known throughout the world for their outstanding quality. The county also boasts four golf clubs open to the public with 72 holes of spectacular golfing amid the Blue Ridge Mountains. For those willing to explore the quiet rural communities and roam through the rustic landscape, many other opportunities exist to relax and enjoy the enchanting scenery and find your own secret hideaways
